For years, businesses were told that a serious website needed a custom backend to be flexible, scalable, and credible. That made sense when publishing online required heavy engineering effort and every meaningful change depended on developers. That is no longer true for most business websites.

Today, AI can generate a working site in minutes. Modern deployment platforms can put that site into production almost immediately. And many business websites do not need a traditional backend or database at all. Vercel now describes itself as “the AI Cloud,” while Netlify explicitly positions itself around creating with AI or code and deploying instantly. Cloudflare, Netlify, and Vercel now belong in the same modern deployment conversation because all three make it possible to ship fast without managing traditional infrastructure.

The old argument for custom infrastructure has weakened because most websites are not software products. They are commercial assets: marketing sites, company sites, landing pages, content hubs, and lead-generation properties. Their job is to communicate value clearly, load quickly, publish reliably, and support revenue. Google’s SEO guidance still centers on fundamentals like crawlability, site structure, and useful content, not on bespoke backend engineering for its own sake.

AI Changed the Economics of Building Websites

The biggest shift is not that templates improved. It is that AI dramatically lowered the cost of producing front-end code. A founder, marketer, or operator can now describe a site, generate a strong starting point, refine the layout and messaging, and move to deployment quickly. That changes the question from “Should we custom-code this?” to “What actually needs to exist beyond the front end?” In many cases, the honest answer is: very little. Vercel’s platform positioning and AI documentation both reinforce that the emphasis is now on shipping AI-powered web experiences faster.

This is why “vibe coding” matters. It does not mean architecture stopped mattering. It means writing the first version of the site is no longer the scarce or expensive step it once was. The harder work now is deciding what the site should say, how it should convert, how it should be structured, and how simple the architecture can be without sacrificing business outcomes. Netlify has moved in the same direction, with official positioning around AI-powered development and AI code tools deploying directly to production workflows.

Static Sites Often Win Because Many Websites Do Not Need a Database

A large percentage of business websites do not need authenticated user flows, complex server-side logic, or a live application database. They need pages, forms, analytics, search-friendly structure, and a manageable publishing workflow. For those sites, static or mostly static architecture is often the smarter default because it removes moving parts that create cost and risk without creating meaningful business value.

Cloudflare’s documentation explicitly says static assets such as HTML, CSS, images, and other files can be uploaded as part of a Worker and served with caching handled by Cloudflare. Cloudflare also documents static-site deployment through Pages, while Netlify and Vercel both center fast deployment as a core part of their value proposition. That makes Cloudflare, Netlify, and Vercel a shared category in practice: modern platforms for shipping websites quickly, globally, and with far less infrastructure overhead than a traditional custom stack.

Security is one reason simpler architecture often wins. OWASP’s Top 10 remains focused on risks such as broken access control, injection, security misconfiguration, and insecure design. Those risks become more relevant as applications grow more dynamic, stateful, and custom. A static site is not automatically secure, but reducing unnecessary backend logic, admin surface area, and database exposure can reduce attack surface materially.

WordPress and HubSpot Still Matter, but for a Different Reason

WordPress and HubSpot should still be part of this discussion, but not because building websites is hard. They matter because operating websites over time is still hard.

There is a difference between generating a site and running one. Teams still need publishing workflows, permissions, reusable modules, non-technical editing, analytics, approvals, forms, and CRM integration. That is where mature CMS platforms still earn their place.

WordPress remains relevant because it continues to dominate CMS usage. W3Techs reports that WordPress powers 42.5% of all websites and 59.8% of websites with a known CMS as of March 21, 2026. That level of adoption reflects ecosystem maturity and the fact that many organizations still need a practical publishing system more than they need a custom application stack.

So WordPress and HubSpot are no longer the only alternatives to custom development. They are now part of a broader reality: AI can generate the site, Cloudflare, Netlify, and Vercel can deploy it, and CMS tools can help teams actually operate it.

AI Can Do a Lot of SEO Work, but Not All of It

AI also changes the SEO conversation. You can ask an AI tool to act like an SEO expert and get title tags, metadata, schema ideas, page outlines, internal-link suggestions, and draft copy in seconds. That compresses a large amount of routine production work.

But that does not mean expertise disappeared. The hard part is no longer just producing recommendations. The hard part is deciding which recommendations actually matter.

That is why the better claim is not that AI eliminates agencies altogether. It is that AI commoditizes a large share of routine web and SEO production work. Agencies still matter when they provide real leverage: positioning, conversion strategy, advanced technical execution, strong editorial judgment, original research, or specialized integrations. The weaker agencies are the ones still selling repetitive production work that AI now does cheaply and quickly. This last point is an inference from how official platform capabilities have evolved, rather than a direct statement from a single source.

Why Cloudflare, Netlify, and Vercel Belong Together

Cloudflare, Netlify, and Vercel should be named together because they now sit in the same decision set for modern website deployment.

Vercel leans hardest into AI-native workflows and modern front-end deployment. Netlify emphasizes “create with AI or code, deploy instantly” and supports AI code tool workflows directly in its docs and product positioning. Cloudflare combines static delivery with the option to add edge logic through Workers and Pages. In other words, these three platforms give teams a practical way to go from prompt to production without defaulting to a traditional custom backend.

That means the practical menu for many businesses now looks like this: WordPress when flexible publishing and ecosystem depth matter; HubSpot when content, forms, and CRM workflows need to stay tightly connected; and Cloudflare, Netlify, or Vercel when the priority is fast deployment, modern workflows, and minimal infrastructure overhead.

The Better Default Is Now Simplest Viable Architecture

The old default was often: build a custom backend unless there is a reason not to.

The better default now is the opposite: use the simplest architecture that meets the actual business need, and add complexity only when the use case clearly demands it. For most business websites, that means fewer systems, less backend logic, less custom code to maintain, and more attention on messaging, performance, structure, and execution.

The rise of AI-assisted creation and the maturity of Cloudflare, Netlify, and Vercel all point in the same direction: simpler systems are often good enough, and often better, for the actual jobs business websites need to do.

When Custom Backends Still Make Sense

Custom backends still have a place. They make sense when the site is actually a product, when the experience depends on authenticated workflows, when the business needs highly specialized application logic, or when compliance and integration requirements go well beyond what a CMS or static architecture can handle cleanly.

But those are exceptions, not the default. In the AI era, the burden of proof has shifted. The question is no longer “why not custom?” It is “what business value justifies owning more software?” That is a strategic question, not a technical reflex.
